I tried several export options. Acrobat 6 with color unchanged, X-1a with simulate overprint checked and Generic CMYK Profile, X-1a with simulate overprint unchecked and Generic CMYK Profile, X-1a with simulate overprint unchecked and US Sheetfed uncoated v2. They all had the same results.

http://www.mattbeals.com/pdf_export.sit and try using "Press unchanged with profiles" and see how that works.

I have been having this problem without involving pdf files at all. In fact, I have created pdf files that seem to check out just fine, all blacks are 100% black as expected but when I rip the files they convert to 4 color blacks. I am using a Creo Brisque RIP.

Then it's a problem with ICC profiles somewhere.

Apparently the problem is with InDesign CS2, since I tested the files using CS1 and they work just fine. I can't seem to get rid of the profile from CS2.

CMYK values are absolute. They don't change on their own unless theres a profile involved.

First, make sure the CMYK photoshop tiff doesn't have profile embedded. Turn off ICC profiles when you save the file in the dialog box. Then check to see if ID is using color management in your color settings under the edit menu. If it is, turn it off (CS2 is emulate version 2.x). Then when you output, set the color to be "composite leave unchanged" (print or export dialog), NOT CMYK otherwise you'll be running it through a profile.

If this doesn't work for anybody having the same problems, trash your preferences or completely uninstall/reinstall InDesign and start from scratch. InDesign isn't broke. I'm confident Matt's pdf export preset works fine and if it doesn't then it's another profile being used somewhere or the wrong color swatch. Simple as that.

Edit: If theres a transparency involved, all bets are off. Double check your flattener preview.

just load it from the PDF export preset menu. It's the button that says "load".

I've seen this type of thing happen when the Black color is RGB-based and the rip converts it to CMYK.
