indesign CS2 pdf with opentype fonts placed in Quark 4.11

I work in an environment where our ads are created in Indesign CS, saved as pdfx1a files from Indesign and placed and printed through Quark 4.11.

This has been working well until we upgraded to Indesign CS2.

When we create a document in CS2 with an Opentype font, pdf it, place it and print it in quark we get the following Rip error

%%[ Error: undefined; OffendingCommand: .notdef ]%%

Stack:
-dict-
/Private
-dict-
-dict-
-save-

%%[ Flushing: rest of job (to end-of-file) will be ignored ]%%

I can use the exact same file in Indesign CS and it is not a problem.
I can save it as an eps file from quark and try to distill it and I get the same error in Distiller as on my RIP.

We are holding off on Indesign CS2 until we figure out how to fix this.
We do get several ads from outside and I am sure it is only a matter of time before it starts biting us again.

Our designers do not have Distiller, so printing a postcript and distilling it is not an option

Any Ideas?

Neither Adobe or our Rip support has been able to help us

It's not Adobe's or the RIP's problem, the problem is placing a PDF into Quark. Especially Quark 4.11. If you must place a PDF into Quark, make it a ASCII (or binary) level 2 EPS file.

Never, ever, ever, even if your life depends on it, place a PDF into any version of Quark less than 6.5. Even with 6.5, never ever, ever place a PDF into Quark. Except a PDF from PhotoShop, that's all binary data in a PDF wrapper. Even then, Quark only understands PDF v1.4 at the highest, and not all of PDF v1.4 at that.

Thanks for your reply.
We are a daily paper and are transitioning from a Quark to Indesign workflow.
It will take some time because of all of the 3rd party software tied to Quark 4.
Currently we are 25%Indesign and 75% Quark.
95% of the time our pdfs through Quark are fine.
We also use pitsop for all of our ads that come from the outside world.
We have had alot of problems with printing color seps through quark using level 2 eps file. Level one works great but is no longer and option through the newer adobe software.

Hi,

Just an FYI, Open Type fonts only exist in PDF 1.6. If you create a PDF from 1.5 or lower or EPS from CS 2 using Open Type Fonts, they are converted to either TT or PS based on the Open Type Font.

Regards,
Greg

p.s. I agree with Matt. PDF's placed in Quark 4.11 can be problematic. It's a shame that Adobe removed the L1 option. Although we need to progress foward, it is still the most compatible EPS out there and should be an option.
