Multiply Layers from Photoshop don't multiply in InDesign
When making a multi layer Photoshop File, where some layers are set to multiply it does not multiply them in InDesign.
Any sugestions on that or did anyone had same expirience?

I just did a test - I made a new photoshop document, put two boxes, one red and one blue, on different layers, moved 'em so they overlapped a bit and set the top layer to Multiply, which made it purple-ish where they overlapped.
I placed the native PSD into IDCS and it still looked purple where it overlapped, so the multiply effect was still in use. I exported this as a PDFx-1a file as well as PDF 1.5 and the overlap area was still purple-ish in each.
So, I don't have the same problem... I'm also using all CS programs on a PC.

Thanks for the effort lynx.
What I meant was that the layer settings don't work in InDesign in a different way. How the photoshop file behave itself in InDesign is the same as you had in your test.
What I was about to find out is when you have a Photoshop file, say as you have, but just with one layer. Make a square and colour it Cyan. Set this layer to multiplay. Then import it to InDesign and put it over a yellow box made in InDesign. You would expect to see a green polygon now, but you don't. Sure in this situation you can set the photoshop file to multiply again in InDesign, but you can't do it always this way.
When you have a object in Photoshop with out background and you put a soft shadow, say 30% occopacity and set this layer to multyplay in Photoshop it will knock out the background object in InDesign.
Any ideas how to get around this issue?
Cheers, Dimitri

Does it print incorrectly or just view incorrectly?
Try turning on Overprint preview to see if it comes out correctly.

I've seen this issue before as well. It didn't preview correctly or print correctly.

I've tried a couple of things here before I got a little busy today - no luck here either. Maybe that will change with IDCS2?

you can only do this if everything in photoshop is set to over print. Most files would only have one layer set to overprint, but the rest should pirnt ok.

Sorry dimitri.. misread your question. Yeah it will work only with the one layer. I am kind of old school myself and let photoshop do its thing with images dropshadows etc, illustrator for vector stuff only and indesign for text and combining the photoshop and illustrator stuff. The old way is the long way but is always predictable.

What I am trying to do is, when you have to depach a person with fuzzy hair, you could have one layer of the hair set to overprint and the normal layer underneath would have all the rest, but at the hair section maybe a few pixels (soft) of the layermask.
Than you get a pretty good mask and it works a treat when you can put the background colour in PS, but in our case we can't as we supply them to a magazine and don't know what the layouter do with it.
Cheers, Dimitri
