Can you "print colors in black" in InDesign?

In PageMaker you have the option to print colors in black... can't find it in InDesign. There are times when I just don't want the colors to screen when I print them (for faxing proofs, etc.). I see an option for "text as black" but that doesn't help with graphics. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance,

Tracy :?

Other than just printing a grayscale composite, I'm not sure there is a way to do that. I looked in the help menu and this is what I found. Not sure if this would help any.

sorry, I didn't realize that just brought up the main help menu. In the search field I typed in "black+graphics" and clicked on "Determining how graphics print." ops:

Isn't email a better option? Export direct to a screen quality PDF, much better than fax.

(Assuming all the colours have been added to the Swatches palette as either spots or cmyk or rgb mixes)

Save.

Select the colours in the Swatches palette that you want to print black

Click on the Trash icon (bottom right of the palette)

When Delete Swatches dialog box pops up choose Defined Swatch abnd choose Black from the dropdown menu.

Print

Don't save

In the "swatches" pallete, click on the BLACK swatch and then hold down the shift key and then choose the swatch at the bottom of the list. This will select all the swatches. Choose "merge swatches" from the flyout menu and that should merge all of them to the black.

You may have some spot colors in the swatch list that won't convert. This can be fixed by using the "Ink Manager".

Select the spot color in the Ink Manager and changing the ink alias to process black.

I've done this a few times and it makes all the type and logos and stuff into a nice dark color when you output a laser. Just make sure you save the file before you do all of this crap and then revert after you get that pretty laser.

AWESOME! Thank you so much Glars and Joe! Worked like a charm. I'm forever indebted...

Eye: It's complicated, but fax works best for most of our proofs... we do email .pdf files if it's critical.

Thanks again!
Tracy
