InDesign 3.01. G5 Dual 1.8 2GB RAM.

I have a couple of files that I can see the thumbnail just fine but when I try to open them I get the beautiful spinning beachball and have to force quit. Anyone have an idea of how I can restore these files? I have tested on other machines with the same results.

Have you tried to open them with no fonts loaded? Corrupt font has done this to me a time or two.

haha! Never heard it being called Beachball of Death! good one! I'm gonna use that!

are you trying to open them across a network? Do they open when the file is on your machine? Are you running suitcase with auto-activation on? Turn off all that auto activating shit and remove any third party 'helper' files tied with IDCS.

It's the fonts!! I was getting the same thing. I just turn off font activation for those files and they open fine.

Thanks, the problem ended up being a layerd tiff that was in the document. Once I flattened the tiff file and re-saved the document opened fine.

Been a good week for the beach ball thang at my store and to quantify it like that is gold!

The beachball of death actually started out as the pinwheel of death, but when most of my mac users call in with an issue they refer to it as "the beachball thingie" so i changed it up to bachball of death. it is free for the taking.
