Overprint eps black

Does Indesign have a capability for overprint black in imported eps files where black has not been set to overprint in the app that created the eps? I would prefer to use ID but Quark v4 has got this capability which is very useful.

the only way I have figured is to copy and paste out of illustrator into ID, rather than placing, you can then set your overprints in attributes or trap styles.

Adobe help says:
"In file formats that are not purely pixel-based, the nonpixel data will prevent the image from working properly with built-in trapping. Built-in trapping cannot trap graphics saved in the AI (Adobe Illustrator), DCS, EPS, Adobe PDF, or PostScript file formats; if you want to trap these graphics file formats, use Adobe In-RIP Trapping"

and oh yeah.. when you copy and paste from illus 10, ID treats the paste as a group, and cannot be ungrouped or modified

Black overprint in eps

I think you might find that if black overprint or trapping have not been applied within the artwork prior to the eps being created, that not even Quark can apply trapping or overprint for the items embedded in that eps. You probably know there is a 'set black to overprint' in the prefernce settings of InDesign.

You could opt to enable overprint black at RIP-end for in-RIP trapping.
The only danger with this is that it could add overprint for black, where it might have specifically defined to be set to knock-out by a client (I.e. large black header running partially over a coloured background).

If you need to trap at the host application end for some reason:
for Illustrator EPS files: use the "Overprint Black command" in illustrator to quickly convert all (unlocked/visible) blacks to overprint.
