InDesign reflow issue

I have reflow issues with InDesign that I just don't understand. For example: I receive a customer file, preflight and submit first proof. Proof comes back with minimal type changes. And now, the headache begins. I make a small type change, like adding or removing a comma. This change does not cause the line that I am on to re-break, however, text reflows on other lines within the paragraph. I then have to go work the entire paragraph to get back the line breaks that I originaly proofed.!? ahhhhhhhhhhh!!!!! I hope this is some kinda preference setting that can be done away with.

What OS are you using? I had this problem when using Indesign in Mac OS 9, but the problem went away when we switched to OS X. I assumed it was because the customer was using newer versions of fonts that 9 didn't like.

I'm sorry, I am using OSX 10.3.2 and InDesign CS.

One (or maybe 2) things to try is once you notice a sudden re-flow check the Paragraph Pallet Options submenu and see if "Adobe paragraph composer" or "Adobe Single line composer" is selected. I started pulling my hair out one day when I got a line break that was really stupid, until I switched to Single line composer then the problem went away.

Another thing is to see if "Metrics" or "Optical" tracking is on. This also will effect flow.

Good luck

Thanks Sparky! Changing to single line composer is the ticket. I wish InDesign would have made "Single Line Composer" the default in the program and left "Paragraph Composer" as the optional choice. I have changed it to my default when InDesign is launched, so at least files created in-house will not have this reflow issue. I went through active jobs and archived jobs, and it seems that every InDesign CS file ever received from a customer has "Paragraph Composer" applied throughout. Oh well, at least now I know what to look for. Thanks!
