InDesign and SMB servers

Here's a fun one. I opened up 2 InDesign files from our SMB server and exported them to .eps. Problem is that they are invisible to the Finder, Quark, Illustrator. In fact I can only see them in InDesign and even then I can't place them.

Anyone?

Try a windows machine

I've had that happen with our Win2KServer even without using SMB. Try opening the directory with a windows workstation. You can set the view options to view all files. Copy the problem files to a new directory and they should show up on the Mac. If it keeps happening, you may want to run a check disk on that drive.

So would you say this is an InDesign issue? We bounce eps's out of quark and AI all day long. Its only InDesign that gives us this grief.

No, I think it's a SFM (Services for Macintosh) issue. SFM provides basic mac file sharing, but doesn't really provide the kind of disk access a mac really wants. Although I had some problems in OS9 (minor really). OSX has some major ones. One repeatable error is to take say 50 files and drag them to the trash. OSX will lock the files before it attempts to erase them and then give you an error saying you can't delete the files because they are locked. I have another thread going in the OSX forum ranting about problems like these.
