you can save the raster image as a grayscale
tiff with the clipping path, then apply the spot color in Illustrator CS2

That will make my image a monotone, however the clipping path is not recognized. The background of the image is still seen.

I assume you are placing an eps file into Illustrator?

Yes, Illustrator CS2

Is the path an actual "clipping" path or just a path?
|
Using PS7: there is a path and the clipping path is turned on with a flatness of 1.

The reason I ask, I was able to place in Illy CS2, a Photoshop CS2, duotone monotone .eps file with a clipping path, and it worked with no problems.

When I initially place the EPS all I see is a box. If I embed the EPS then the image shows up with the clipping path.
Here is the scoop:
If I place a monotone EPS with clipping path - the clipping image is only visible when I embed it. This causes the EPS to change to CMYK
If I place the monotone EPS without a clipping path - the image will print as a monotone however I need to background to also disappear.
