dead PDFs?
hey. my boss is being a little on the demanding side with this. he wants us, for proofs, to send vector PDFs that are completely dead and uneditable, but he wants them to open in illustrator without a password.
i told him he's nuts, and i can make a hi-res, then make it a PDF, but he's big on vector for this. any one have any clue how to do it?
EDIT: forgot to mention, i'm using illustrator CS

PDF files that have all the fonts outlined?
Is that the question?
Unless you have absolutly no images in your PDF, it will never be "vector".
Vector refers to objects that contain no rastered parts (ie pixels).
All PDF files can be opened in Illy, but that doesn't mean you should. Illustrator is NOT a PDF editor.
What app will you be using to make the PDF file, Indesign? Quark?
What OS you on? Mac or PC?

we use illustrator almost exclusively at work. we pretty much only deal with vector.
here's exactly what my boss wants: (he's none too bright in this area)
he doesn't quite know what "outlining a font" entails, and won't listen to my explination, simple as it may be, so that doesn't matter much,
he "doesn't use" acrobat, so in his opinion, no one else does.
the only adobe apps on this computer are: illy cs, 8 & 9, photoshop 5, and acrobat 7. i'm trying to convince him to move away from classic apps, since our computers are a little old to be running the classic environment with illy up (as he likes to do, and watch it crash and burn).
essentially, he wants to be able to open it without a problem or password in illustrator, and be able to zoom to 6400% without "seeing pixels" as he puts it, but he wants it to be completely locked down. he doesn't want it to act like vector in illustrator. he doesn't want it to act like anything, for that matter..."just be like a picture"
keep in mind, this is the guy that doesn't understand that RIPping rasterizes it...
EDIT: hehe, forgot. i'm on OS X 10.3.9, and OS 9.2.2 for the older stuff

Good grief. As a test (good luck if your boss goes for it) make a pdf of one of your illy files. Raster or open the pdf in Photoshop (resolution up to you) save as a pdf and Presto! Locked down vector photo pdf thingy.

You can do editing to it even if the fonts are outlined. Just can't edit the fonts except remove them and replace them by typing in new editable fonts. Just a thought.
