The folder is only a temporary depository. Keep an alias on your desktop or in your finder window. before you load the job put the fonts in. when your done with the job take the fonts out. That way your only using what the customer has supplied, any conflicts with your system fonts, manage in font book.

OK, I ran a quick test on 2 machines and copied the same fonts into the fonts folder. When I opened the same doc on each machine the type still reflowed. My only other thought at this point, (when I have the time later) is to uninstall Illustrator 10 from one of the machines that's having the problem and reinstall it from the box used on one of the machines that's OK but use the serial number from the one that I uninstalled - you never know

Managing fonts is one of the biggest pains, Look in the forum under "Fonts" theres some good information. However when you get down to it its still a crap shoot and very time consuming.

Good Luck

I wonder if it's not the fonts at all, but maybe a preference setting in Illustrator thats different from the other Macs?

Thanks, but I did check that all the prefs matched on all the machines, so that's not it either.

Are the fonts that are reflowing resident on the macs themselves? If so are absolutely 100% sure that they are identical, I don't just mean called the same?

Here's an easy way to track down the greif if you have a server...

• first of all clear all you font caches

• clear out any fonts from Library and User Library you absoluetly dont need, see this link - http://www.prepressforums.com/ftopict-5602.html

• Then copy the font from the 'good machine' to a server.

• On the bad machine load the font into whatever flavour of Suitcase you're using and activate it

• Open the offending doc and watch for reflow, in theory it shouldn't happen, if it does after following these steps post back and we'll take it from there.

(it's 5.30 am on Saturday in the UK but my machine will be on all day, certainly for the next 14 hours, and I'll be infront of it for most of that time)

I double checked all font folders on all MACs to make sure the offending fonts weren't there (the problem is mostly with Helvetica Condensed although it has happened with some others). We run all our fonts from our server they reside in folders for each job. But I'm still getting reflow on the 2 machines when the fonts are opened from the same source.

The two Macs that are different, are they running the same OS?
Are they the same OS as at least one of the three good Macs?
If so, try copying the Suitcase Prefs (in OS 10.3.9, located in user/home/library/preferences/suitcase preferences, copy this entire folder) from a "good" Mac to one of the offending Macs and see if that doesn't help.

Report back and we'll try something else.

I finally think I've solved it. I knew it would be something simple I was missing - 3 of the machines had been updated to Illustrator 10.0.3 and the other 2 were on 10.0.0. I kept looking for a problem with the fonts and just missed it. I updated the 2 machines and the problem seems to be gone.

Thanks for all your help.
