SPOT color registration
This is a minor annoyance at best, but for some unknown reason the items I color with "registration" from the color palette always come out CMYK plus whatever spot colors make up the job. So when I have a spot color job, I always have to turn off several plates.
No big deal, but I'd sooner not depend on my memory, know what I mean?
Have looked and looked, but cannot find any way to change this in CS or CS2
PLZ advise.

The color "Registration" is intended for putting registration marks on the job. With todays imposition software this is rarely used unless you are doing impositions in the layout application. The color "registration" consists of all colors in the document. It should never be substituted for black. It should also never be substituted for a built black as this would make the ink Density 400% on a four color job, or a greater density when spot colors are also added.

Right. I get all that. I still use Illy for simple jobs that don't need imposition (one up posters for example). And it DOES inclued ALL of the colors in the job PLUS cyan, magenta, yellow and black.
I just want to know what I am doing to make that happen...
...hell, I've gotten CMYK marks on jobs that were all BLACK for heaven's sake.
It gets OLD.

I think you are missing the boat....
Registration is intended to be on every plate.
Hence the name registration.... as in registration on press from color to color / or plate to plate.
Don't worry about the marks being on all the plates/seps.
If your job is Spot color, only the Spot colors will be output to film or plates. Nothing will be missing, unless you tagged a bunch of items in the layout with the color registration....
Hope this helps.

I guess I didn't make myself clear...
I am getting plates that do not exist.
On a job that includes ONLY two PMS colors I get the two PMS colors PLUS a cyan plate with nothing but marks, a magenta plate with nothing but marks, a yellow plate with nothing but marks, and a black plate with nothing but marks. See what I mean? Four plates I don't need. Sure I can turn 'em off, but hell...

I understand completely.
That's how it is supposed to work... don't shoot the messanger.
Are you printing laser seps? How are you seeing this "problem"?
btw.. you're thinking too hard....

Your not using "registration" as a "color" are you?
That would make my head splode.
