Topaz Error

Our Topaz scanner started periodically giving an error message when attempting to initialize:

"The geometric mark (metal strip on tray system) cannot be found. Maybe the mark is dirty."

Usually, shutting everything down and then rebooting would fix the problem, but it has gotten worse. The last time I attempted to use the scanner I couldn't get the message to go away after fighting with it for 20 or 30 minutes.

I can't find any indication in any of the documentation of exactly where this "geometric mark" is, so I can't clean it. The operating manual says to "check the geometric mark and light path. If necessary, have the Service Department check the array adjustment."

I've cleaned every easily accessible surface hoping to perhaps clean the geometric mark in the process, but haven't resolved the error message. Does anyone know specifically where this mark is?

And, if the machine needs service/repair, does anyone know of someone in Oklahoma area or an adjacent state who can service these machines (we don't have a service contract w/Heidelberg anymore)? I suspect the problem is easily fixable and hate to write off the scanner for something that seems to be minor, but we don't do a lot of scanning these days so spending a lot of money on the problem is difficult to justify.

Are you running LinoColor for the interface? I recall that GeoAssistant was an 'option' that could be deselected, assuming you make your crops and selections manually. This probably won't correct what's causing the error, but perhaps it may be a quick fix to prevent the error from popping up.

Yes we have been using LinoColor. I'll give that a try.

I downloaded a demo of Silverfast's OS X software and it crapped out initializing too, due to the same error I assume.

thx for the tip.

Thumbs up Topaz problem

If you feel comfortable you7 might look to see if the Mirror is dirty.
You will finf it uner the chase in the rear part of the machine.
Be very careful with the mirror.
I believe a Q tip , a class cleaning tissue, and some lens celaner will be required. If it is dirty. Be very careful of usint canned air to blow it off.
