Forced Garbage Collection
Anybody ever seen their rip error log rolling with hundreds of lines of "Forced Garbage Collection"?
This one huge four color car ad, built in Corel Draw 11 by an ad agency, gives me grief every week. Both rip logs show all the lines of Forced Garbage Collection. It will crash my 7.1 rip every time, but it will eventually make it to my 5.3.4 rip - without anything missing. Take forever to get their though. I bet there are several hundred lines.
Strange.

How is the file saved, .cdr??
Is the Ad placed in a layout app first?
What is being sent to the RIP?
A little more info may help you get some input.

The ad is built in Corel Draw 11, saved as an eps, Distilled to a PDF using Distiller 5 for Windows. We get the PDF, place it in Quark 6.5 for Mac and print it from Quark straight to the rip using latest version Konica branded ppd for our vrl36 imagestters. One has a 7.1 Mac rip, one is 5.3.4 PC rip. The PC rip will take it eventually, but the Mac rip just locks up tight after about 20 minutes. Both rip logs show jillions of lines of forced garbage collection in the rip log.

I stumbled across this thread, and had a thought...
sounds like the file has transparency in it, am I right?
I believe the "forced garbage collection" is a memory dump, reboot the RIP and also check to see if your temp folder needs to be emptied.
thinkin' out loud, no recent experience with your particular RIP.
your mileage may vary, void in some states and Puerto Rico.
hope it helps,
David

yes, it does have transparency, but the temp folder is clean. It happens every week with this one ad. I'm going to look in the Quark print box for the transparency option and see if there is a way to flatten them.

You have no choices, every file out of Quark is flattened - even Export.
It all goes through a .ps channel and comes out flat.
Try placing the EPS directly into Quark, then write a .ps file. You can surely drop the .ps on the RIP - right? Or Distill to a PDF version 1.3. and maybe print from Acrobat.
Also, be sure you are distilling the Corel EPS as version 1.3 or lower - Quark doesn't always play nice with PDFs. So - dumb it down.
Another shot in the dark as I'm not using the same equipment.

Your Rip is running out of memory!
On the Rip make sure in Rip configuration it is set to use all available memory and the amount of memory reserved for the System is not too high.

corel draw 11 is bad
try using Corel X3 and don't covert to eps or anything
only print from x3 with postscript device to inpuut chaneel on your rip
and enjoy

Hi.,
try to make a PS directly from Corel, I know corel sucks!! but try to get a good PPD for ex from any RIP Provider website. like Xitron.
Distill the PS and then use it on the RIP. Also try the latest Distiller for better PDF results.
I am sure you will have some good results.
Cheers !!
