Hi.
I work for a company that was a traditional repro house until about three years ago, when we made the transition into "digital printing".
We started with the Xerox 5252 and have now progressed onto the latest Xerox 5000. I think coming from a pre-press / repro background is certainly the best way to get into digital print because all the headaches are still at the front end - the workstation.
The problems you will come across, if you are currently just a repro house, are getting your various print jobs "finished". You will need, at the very least, a guillotine, a booklet maker, a folder/creaser. You will get asked to laminate, drill, die-cut etc etc. In the short term you would be well advised to form a good relationship with a local print finishing shop who can do all these jobs for you.
With relation to costs etc, I am based in the UK so things will not be relevent to the States. But in basically we pay 6p for a Colour "click" and charge out at between 15 and 20p per click.
There IS real money to be made in digital printing but you need to go after the better clients, as some people expect to pay very little for their work. You must remember this is a BIG investment.
