Where i am there are envelopes shop charge something like 16.00 us dollars per thousand. We pay like 14 dollars per thousand for just the envelopes themselves. This is for standard #10 one color but it goes up evenly. So we send a lot of envelopes out because its simpler and cheaper. The only time we do them is when we get like 50,000 or more because we do not like to outsource large jobs and we get plenty of time with them.

Excellent Press - We are very happy with it

Hi,
We installed a new one like 2 months back and we have already seeing the job volume going up. The press is doing great. We haven't printed any envelopes and was told lot of same thing which other people are discussing in this forum. We do not belive in outsourcing as we like to keep everything inhouse even it costs little more due to quality control and the ability to have full control. We haven't printed any envelopes but I like the idea of changing the blanket. For 4 color envelopes maybe have a 7 day turnaround and run all the envelopes in one shot on a certain day. If people demand faster turnaround then demand more money.

Overall we got the Presstek 34 DI and I have created a forum called dipressforums.com I would love all the expert advices from people to post their ideas on that forum. My idea about that forum is to have a place for discussing about DI presses in general ONLY. Go to www.diPressForums.com
I keep on posting many articles about what we are finding about the press overall.

Shawn

DI vs Conventional/ctp

We had a QMDI and we were amazed at what it could do. then we purchased a SM52 and CTP And wow the pressman has a little more work to do, but it is quicker. and I can run the sm52 at 15,000 imp/hr. maybe the new ryobi 52 di is better than our old qmdi, but try to do metallic ink. On the di I would switch between High gloss labels and offset stock I would have to switch from low tack to med tac to get rid of toning issues. Back to cost, for a small shop just getting into 4 color by all means old DI. For under $100,000 you can have a nice setup.

After 35 years as a prepress and desktop person (along with a complete list of other skills related to the trade) I am now a Presstech 5334 DI operator (come full circle) having been around many, many presses of all configurations from single color 36" Heidelberg proofing press to an 18 unit 35" web, to a 7/color 40" Kamori with coater, down to a 2/color Ryobi, I can say that for short run (1,000-10,000 12 x 18) this press can't be beat. We have run our plates for over 13,000 impressions without breakdown, it's waterless, and turn around time for back up is impressive, i.e. tonight I just ran 1300 sheets of 80# coated text 12 x 18 med-full coverage, 15 minutes for plate imaging, 30 sheets only for make-ready, ran at 6,000 s.p.h. drying time was 15 minutes and reloaded the stack and ran the back-up at the same speed. (job was a 8.5 x 11 tri-fold brochure run 2-up work and tumble). Besides the fact it was RIP'd at 300lpi the machine also has the capability to run stochastic screening.

I've only been running it for a month, but I love it.

A new option to consider is the SM 52 Anicolor. Here is a link with a report on our first customer in the U.S.:

Heidelberg - Taylor Corporation Becomes First U.S. Anicolor Adopter

More info can be found at:

Heidelberg - Speedmaster SM 52 - Overview

Fast make ready with the high quality of a conventional press! If you are going to Graph Expo, there is an Anicolor Event on Monday, September 10, 2007 at 4 p.m. at Heidelberg booth #1200 - right in front of the press. Craig Krone of Taylor Corporation will speak about their experience with their multiple presses. If you can not make this, there is also an Expert Spot 4 times a day at the show. Hope to see you there!

Regards,

Mark
