you can extend the reach of copper with a repeater or amplifer. Basically a box that will boost and check the integrity of the signal before passing it on.
Fiber optics will be more reliable but more expensive. If you can get pre terminated lengths of fiber. If you have to have someone terminate the fiber on site (which I did because the ends wouldn't fit in our chase) make sure you have several extra strands run and done all at the same time for spares. It's expensive to have someone do terminations on site and you don't want to have them back.
Like mentioned the hardware is usually a plug in module to a switch. We were HP 4000 managed switches several years ago. Very nice devices.
