Processor Upgrades

I am wanting to upgrade a PowerPC G4, 733mhz. Can anyone recommend a good processor to go with that they have used and is proven not to cause problems.

I went through this process as well. I did not upgrade the processor but did get a way faster video card (ATI 9600) as a tide-me-over solution. It helped and was less than a processor upgrade. I use an 867 and have similar issues. Now the leap to Duo Core makes more sense than my choice of the G5's. Easy choice in my opinion - go with the Duo Core rather than the $400 plus to upgrade the processor.

Sonnet DP were the choices I was looking at.

I've upgraded two of the exact same G4's using the Sonnet CPU upgrade. At the time the fastest they had was the 1.2 Ghz but now they have up to 1.8 Ghz single and dual. I think the 1.8 Ghz single would give you a good increase in speed and it's right at $300.00. It was a fast and EASY change.

Dont forget about hard drive upgrades. While processor upgrades may speed up a machine a little in certain tasks, HD speed is a major bottleneck in computers today. We spend much more time starting machine up, launching programs, reading writing files and using Virtual Memory than we use processor intensive tasks. This isn't true for all. Someone in photoshop using filters will benefit from processor upgrades, however that same person eventually will have to save a file, open a file, and if the Pshop file gets big enough they will most likely be reading and writing to virtual memory.
