printers on 22K sterling pa about 20$US ph
studio manager on 17k about 15$ ph
young designer/artworker on 12k about 10$ ph


pay peanuts, get monkeys I thought, so I (think) pay top dollar/pound..but still got monkeys!

I have a question. . . why is discussing salaries such a taboo subject? Every shop I've ever been in it's always been discourage, and seems to always lead to jealousy and animosity.
Now I understand it may not be feasible in larger shops, by why not just lay out to the employees what everyone is earning. Make is something open and discussable. If someone is dissatisfied with their wage it could be discussed openly why they earn less then the next guy. It could motivate them to improve or learn more skills or work harder.

I have 5 years experience in electronic prepress.

In my starting out days I was making pmt's and kerning type that was waxed down on a board. I remember the old compugraphic typesetter and actually developed negs by rocking them in the tray. I even shot "pan film" halftones. Cut rubies for traps. Supered and contacted neg upon neg upon positive upon neg to get final film. Did chokes and spreads on the contact frame.

Anyone remember pan film???????? Anyone remember a film distortion machine?????

So I'm looking at about 17 years in the graphic arts.

Soooo, don't ya think I am underpaid after all????? I do. I really do. Even if I am a monkey, God Knows I am......i still think I am underpaid.
