Being able to cut and paste art from Illustrator straight into Indy is a benefit some of the time instead of 'placing' the image, though there are pros and cons. There is little or no reason for an Illy eps if you have an Indy workflow.

I agree with those who say ID is a Page layout and Photoshop and Illy are the way to place art and/or graphics into it, (and I highly support the CS2 & 3 market) but one thing I see being overlooked in this thread is the fact that Freehand can create several pages in the same document that are different sizes. If a designer is creating say an "invitation" package, all the components can be done in one file. The 8 1/2 x 11 folded invitation, the 3 x 5 response card, the A-7 outer envelope, and the A-2 response envelope can all be laid out to size and contained in one document, which eliminates, creating multiple proofs or final documents for printing.

As a Printer, to me it's a pain in the ass, but to designers it's the greatest thing since sliced bread

Illustrator is one page for one file

Illy can be used for multipage files to, just use layers. I've used it for things like Stationary, although I to prefer it to be done in a page layout app if being supplied by a customer.

yea see i've had artwork designs in on several "layers" and its a nightmare. using some common elements from lower layers and say just changing an image for another "version" so there's several images and several versions - so i have to go in and sort out one-ups of each - delete layers n stuff for each

not saying it doesnt work - it does, but i'd prefer a one up of each just chucked on a massive page - i'll do the rest

Wasn't mentioned yet but one of the great feature ID shares with Illy is the ability to turn text into outlines.
