Welcome aboard, I can't get here as often as I want at the moment, but if you see an empty chair in the lounge, it's mine
Good luck with what you're doing over there, sounds like a hell of a ride!

Hi, Im Terri Freeman. I am from Arkansas and work at a local newspaper. I started in the prepress department in 1999 just a year after high school. In 2003 I left thinking that the newspaper industry wasn't for me, I moved on wanting to go to Nursing School. Took some college classes and deceided that wasn't for me either. A year later I started at a weekly newspaper, with a 7 person staff, doing layout, designing ads, and everything known to man. I moved back to my hometown and got back into prepress. After being there for a while I transfered to the Advertising Dept as a Graphic Designer. While in the prepress dept I helped our Marketing Director switch over to InDesign CS2 and help solve problems that we were having sending to our Rip. Our newsroom is still using OS 9 and Quark 4.0.

Hey all - I just found this site today, after a bad week in the Prepress world. I've been doing this since - um, the 80s. I started on a Mac SE (remember those? Anyone?) at a Sir Speedy Printing, and after almost 20 years of prepress am now at a fairly good position in the visual department of a Really Big Company. I was glad to move in-house, but sometimes the designers and clients can be almost as bad as the random wackos that walk in the front door of a service bureau.
Anyway, nice to meet you all. I've been reading the threads and chuckling softly to myself for an hour or so...I'm not alone!!

Hi, I'm Laura, and I just joined up today. I work at a small printshop in central Illinois. I was directed here by my co-worker/husband, who is also a prepress person. In the same department, no less! I do both graphic design and prepress work, so I see both sides of the equation. I'd like to think it helps me to prepare better files, especially since I am the prepress person handling my own designs.
I have been working at the same company for 15 years (straight out of college), and my primary duties are to design two different monthly magazines?with deadlines a week apart. (Sleep is optional during deadline week!)
I also help to handle the prepress side for several weekly newspapers we print here. I prefer Macs, but I also have a PC sitting beside my Mac to use as needed. We use an Agfa Apogee workflow here, which is miles ahead of the old Lino 300 I first learned on in the early 90s. We're not doing CTP yet, but hope to get there in a few years. Many of our current customers still send in pasteups, so we keep our old camera busy. Luckily more of them are switching to sending in PDF files instead, so we're dragging them into the 21st century a little at a time.
I'm looking forward to learning lots of helpful information here!

Welcome to the land of PPF, Laura!
It's Friday and I guess I'll start your day off with a happy margarita!
Cheers!
