Welcome Risici. This site is dominated mostly by professional print technicians whose backgrounds vary from graphic designers, offset, silkscreen, gravure printing etc...Prepress sort of covers a gamut of skills such as retouching, book publishing all the way to IT and NT type of work. Very diverse but plays close to the vest in prepress. A lot of it pertains to how to get something to work or to fix a client's digital file so it can run through a particular computerized workflow. Several people are drawn to the field to gain experience with different aspects of it, not so much for the printing end. Such as graphic designers wanting to learn how digital files need to be prepared before going to print. Keep in mind this is not for small laser printers but high end presses that cost several million American dollars. As far as being a retoucher, diverse a bit. Be a photographer and a retoucher and many other things in this digital world.

Thanks jimking.
I have looked a bit at some job descriptions as a retoucher and almost all lists some degree of prepress knowledge. Ofcause that is practicly knowledge, but i guess this is a topic i should start to look a bit at.

I didnt expect this forum to be about inkjet printers, it was more to show im not having those huge machines myself

I think the topic under prepress I could start to look into is more knowledge about pdf as a standart (this is a prepress topic right?)
//just saa there is a acrobat forum in here, i guess thats enough answer for me
I'm sorry if this is questions i should read from a manual somewere.

Where to start. There is a lot. For example if you click on the "Forums" tab you'll see all the different catagories such as the "Applications" under applications you'll see the most popular apps one really needs to know but those that are listed are not the only apps to learn. Just go to the Forums and read down the list at the different catagories and read a few threads. Acrobat pdfs are a major player but is only the tip of the iceberg in this business.

Hey folks.
I'm Paul, live'n work in .ro
I started in graphic design in '94, moved to printing in 98. Every day since I cant start my work day without the smell of ink and the sound of the press.
Back that times I was the only one working with a PeeCee (win) in the print shop. Now'a days we have only one mac remaining. (only 5% of the artwork made on a mac)
CorelDraw rulz here. Dont know why this happened. ( - sad -
So now I have to deal with catalogues (.cdr files, 40 pages 500Mb+ in size) made by so-called-designers-yeah-but-they-are-accounts!!?@@-so-what-youhaveaPC-you'r-a-designer f.k!

Cheers,Pxl

Hi everybody,

I am Arnold Roosch from the Netherlands and I have been working in the Graphic Industry for about 16 years, mainly DTP and Preflight. I now work for Markzware for more than 2.5 years. We develop preflight and conversion applications as well as other XTensions and Plugins.
I am on the forum to stay up to date, find out what frustrations there are these days and to see if I can help out with some tips and tricks I learned over the years.
I still work with all latest versions of the most common programmes like Quark, Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, PDF, etc.

Hi Arnold. Way back when I first started fiddling with my digital files (1994) I used to think why do I have to sit here checking whether all these images are CMYK. Surely there must be a piece of software out there that can do this. I started my search.

I managed to find file checking software from 4 Sight (Wam!Net's predecessor) but it was about £20,000 per seat and yet didn't check whether images were RGB or CMYK. It was used by all the national newspapers but I still haven't figured out why. Sort of similar to Quickcut these days

I then came across Flightcheck which was about £200 per seat and did exactly what I was looking for.

Good company Markzware. Always looking out for what the market needs and sometimes delivers them as well!

It's only Monday but pull up a chair and have a drink. I know your bossman Mr Dilling is fond of one or three so I'm sure he'll understand.

Thank you Bart,

Without disturbing this message too much (after all this is meant to introduce newbies like me), thank you for the confidence you have in Marzkware. As a matter of fact David is in the UK at this moment. If there is anything he can help you with, please let me know so he might give you a call and invite you for a pint!
