What are you all...a bunch of lushes or something?

That must be why I feel right at home every time I login here.

PaulK, your avatar is a riot! I had to snag it and send it to somebody. Too funny.

We've all gotta be something

I can't remember who did the song originally (perhaps a PPF Blues fan can remind me) but...

Hello all, I'm Alex from the wonderful state of NJ, land of the Mob. I started in printing making polaproofs part time at the shop where my brother was a salesman. I went to school for computers and networking but I wasn't doing well finding work right out of school. Within a few months I was full time running all the proofing and plating (impress 2000, polaproof till we got rid of it for a creo, and an AGFA galilelo). From there I went into prepress and pissed off a few of the old timers there. I had the computer knowlage, the shop was going CTP and they didn't want to learn that end of it.

7 years later and one attempt to get the hell out of printing I'm back in hell. My brother and a partner started up their own shop. We have a older Hedi 40" with very low impressions on it, 2x Hedi 46-4 Di's, a folder or 2, cutter, Agfa printdrive PDF rip outputing to a ECRM Desertcat 8 for the 40" and delta's for the Di's. Printing still sucks but as long as my brother keeps selling work and staying out of our hair (his partner and I are the prepress/bindry/pressman/janitor/People to yell at when things go wrong) and I have his partner in my corner most of the time it's not too bad. The worst part is we're in another print shop (web shop) and we take care of any covers needed so it's normal to be walking out the door and get a "rush" job where the files will be here "in 5 minutes" 3 hours later still no file and the sun is coming up.

Welcome Alex!! Its friday at PPF and so Im sure it'll get a little interesting at some point. It's been a little quiet lately, but I think everyone is just busy trying to find a way out of prepress.

Hey all, my name is Devin and as I have been "outed" by my wife I will fess-up to exsisting on this forum. I work for a small family owned business in Central IL. We have 4 web press lines, full bindery and mailing depts. We are currently adding a 12 unit DGM w/2 folders and some UV ovens.
I am primarily a lurker as my brain usually works better than my hands or my mouth in conveying things and stuff.
I started in "printing" in 1984 stacking mailbags full of labeled catalogs - we printed the catalogs for Computer Direct (1.2 Mil that year I think).
I quickly found a way to escape that hell and started helping on the web presses - years pass having me doing every job in the shop including manual stripping and running a line camera - then I decided that electronic prepress looked like fun.
It was for about a week, 12 years later I'm still shackled to an imagesetter even though it is a different one and my chain is longer thats my gig.
I am chained to a server cabinet that has hardware (too apothetic to detail)
running ApogeeX (2.5) driving 2 Avantra 44 filmsetters. DTP may be soon but as my wife mentioned our current customer base of small weekly newspapers are just discovering computers.
I really enjoy this forum as the members typically refrain from "flame and ignore" tactics.

Work beckons.
