Printing Issue with OS 10.4.2

Unless someone helps me, I'm going to take a hammer to my computer! I'm printing a Indesign 3.0 file that has both meged data and a placed PDF file on the master. Each file consists of about 150 pgs. The total file size is about 7MB. I am using a G5 with dual processors and 2GB of RAM running OS 10.4.2 and printing to a BizHub C500 color printer with a Fiery S300 external RIP. When I print from InDesign it takes about 3x as long to spool through the pages then it takes at least 6 minutes for the file to rip through the print Q spooling process on the G5. I also see a message show up in the print Q "pictwpstops", "the process pictwpstops stopped unexpectedly with status 1". But the job will still print though. With the power of the G5 and workhorse of the external fiery rip and can't comprehend why it is taking so long. Can anyone help?

Did the said system work in Panther, and if so WTF did ya upgrade without a back up plan? New OS's shouldn't be used for production untill they are tested first to make sure everything still works. That being said first thing to do is repair permissions on the drive. Then delete the printer from Print Center and then reinstall the printer in Print Center. Post back if ya still have issues.

Compared to what? Did this set-up work faster when you had a different OS? Are you printing straight from your Mac or off a Server?

When you say "merged data", are you referring to linked tables/excel files or what? If so, have you tried to embed these links to see if that helps.

Unable to print anything with crop marks!

I was doing a search on google and came across this site (why has it taken me 10 years to look for and find a pre press forum?!). I have been having trouble printing from quark 6.5. I can print anything fine, it's just when I try to add crop marks, it gives me that crazy error "The process Pictwpstops stopped unexpectedly with status 1".

What the heck is that all about?? I can't even do a high res PDF file with crop marks.

If anyone can help, I'd greatly appreciate it! I'm running OS X 10.4.3.

Let me know.

Thanks!!

Welcome to PPF!

that "pictwpstops" error (as you probably noticed from the search responses) doesn't get a lot of answers, just questions from people getting the errors.
There is a lot of things that can cause this, could be an image or a link to a file, or from the PPD used, or from something totally different.
I don't have Tiger so I can't help you with that end.
Describe your Quark file (no. of pages, links, fonts used, etc.) and maybe that will help out.
Are you working off a server or what?
Any recent hacks installed?
Quark xts?

Cheers,
David

Hi David,

Thank you for caring! Let me see... My quark file (right now) is only one page. It's basically a full page ad with a couple of tiff files and an illustrator .eps logo. It prints fine until I want the 'ol crop marks.

I am just working off of my own hard drive. I don't have any hacks installed, and have no extra crazy Quark Xts. That is what is so weird! Of course, before this whole OSX upgrade, everything was fine! I just kind of went along with not worrying about the crop marks, but I'd like to figure it out so I can have it on my final high resolution PDF files.

So I don't know if it's a PPD problem or what. I did browse around this forum looking for some answers, but a lot of that code stuff is over my head.

Anyway, let me know if any of this helps. I appreciate you trying!

Samantha

I'm leaning towards a PPD problem.
What printer are you printing to?
Have you tried using a different PPD?
Have you tried print center repair?
Are you making a .ps file and using distiller to make your PDF or exporting from quark?
I've heard, but I'm not sure if this will do any good, if you remove (put it on your desktop) the vista xt from Quark and try that.

it's troubleshootin' time,
David

Troubleshootin' here we come!

Ok, I'm printing to an Apple LaserWriter 8500 (B&W). I'm using the Apple LaserWriter 8500 v3010.103 PPD. It claims it's using the 1.0 version when I go to the Printer Setup, Name & Location area.

I changed it to a Generic PPD and I got the "error drawing page 1" (when I tried to print with crop marks). But it printed fine without them!

Are there some other ones to try? (Sorry for my lameness on knowledge on this front.) Lemme know.

Print Setup Repair could be a good idea. If nothing else works I'll give that a go.

For the high res PDF file, I'm just doing the Export Layout as PDF thing, and getting a .ps at the end. Then I would just distill it. However, it doesn't get to that stage. It just hangs there.

I tried the moving vista xt but I got the same "error drawing page 1" again.

Craziness!!

I emailed my "friends" at Quark just for FUN and I'll let you know if they have a solution for me.

I do appreciate the suggestions though, if anything else comes to mind, let me know!

Crop Mark-less in Toronto,

S

You may need to make a virtual .ps printer to do this, but...

Try printing (not exporting) to .ps
go to print, set it up like you normally do, click on the "printer" button at the bottom, select your printer in the pull down, and then click on the "copies and options" button and drag down to "output options". Select save as file and format as postscript.

2 users
Had the same"pic"error a while back except my files were showing up as 16k,when they should have been larger.Don't necessarily remember anything about crop marks. The other user worked fine.
Try creating a dummy user and see if Quark works.
We ended up trashing my user and making me a new one to get Quark 6.5 to workagain.
