Backup options....

Hello!

I believe I was reading here recently about an interesting backup system which I am interested in. I cannot find this info in the archives. I currently run a Sony AIT 4 tape autoloader and I need something bigger and better.

help!

Are you archiving your files onto Tape?
or
Backing up to tape and archiving seperately?

How much data in size are you Archiving/Backing up to tape right now?

I am archiving to CD/DVD and backing up to AIT tape.

well, I just did an archive, so my system is lean at about 150GB. (we're pretty busy right now) when this data is backed up, it fills almost 3 AIT tapes (4 tape autoloader)
when the 4 tapes are almost full, I archive all data I am able to and place the 2nd 4 tape magazine into the loader. then I start all over again. does this make sense?

Our IT guy told me about our email/web/intranet/prism server backup using an LTO tape drive.

Apparently the drives can hold up to 400gb on one tape??

I am waiting for more info from Creo as part of a server upgrade package.

Dennis Wyers.

we back up daily to an external drive as disaster recovery (designer stupidity). When a job is completed it's archived to a DVD.

it's a system that has worked fairly well for me for several years.

We do a multi part back up. We use Retrospect Server and have client loaded on all the workstations. We back up onto a Lacie Big Disk 500gb then make a copy onto a Dual Layer DVD for offsite, we are looking into a online backup solution as well to make for a three part backup solution. Its overkill, but when you need the info its worth it all.

We archive and backup with DAT tapes using retrospect. We backup daily and archive every weekend. We run a script that automatically moves any job inactive for more than 60 days to a seperate 1 terabyte volume on the server. That way we can retrieve jobs that are between 2 and 6 months old without having to go to the tape backup.

What do you do with the files on the 1 terabyte server after 6 months?

We archive to VXA-2 tape (2 sets, switched weekly, the inactive one is taken offsite). And we backup (RSyncX) to an external LaCie HD.

The jobs that are pulled of the active server are thrown away from the backup volume after 6 months(they are archived after they are moved, this way we have a backup of the final job as it was printed). This is just convenience for us as we do a lot of unaltered reprints and often it is only a couple of months after printing the original job!
