Replacing Conventional Camera?

We are a book printer looking to replace our conventional camera with an electronic solution that will in the end be a PDF. We would be scanning up to 8.5 X 11 copy and need to be able to mantain margins, skew & such while delivering the same or better quality as the existing camera

We are currently using a Xerox DocuImage 6205
with the scantool and scanfix software then flowing the scanned tiff files into Quark and setting/checking margins by hand.

This works but is slow at best.

I briefly worked in a location doing much the same, although, from the Xerox we were getting PDF (the TIFF in a PDF wrapper) rather than adjusting the margins in Quark, we used the Enfocus Pitstop plugin for Acrobat to adjust the margins. The same can be done with the Quite a Box of Tricks plug-in. In Pitstop you can create Action Lists that will automate the task.

Well, we have something that works well where I work. It's a Fujitsu FI-4750C flatbed scanner with a duplex Auto Document Feeder (ADF). We use this with a program called Precise Page Positioning (PPP). This program allows you to define any margin to all pages or the left and right pages individually. It will automatically de-skew the pages and clean up around the edges if you want it to. It scans the pages as TIFFs, but you can then save the final pages as either single or multipage PDF files. The program is a little bit difficult to figure out at first because there are so many options you can choose from, but once you learn how to use it, you will love it. Reducing or enlarging pages can prove to be very tricky, though, but it is possible. My only grip about the Fujitsu scanner using the ADF is screens and hairline rules not picking up very well using the maximum 800dpi setting. Yes, 800 dpi maximum. I'm sure this program will work well with a different scanner that can support a higher resolution.

Julyski, I have a very similar situation in which I need to scan and OCR a 400 page book that has 5 1/2" x 8 1/2" page size. does your setup allow to auto feed pages at this size? and how much of the original formating is held. Can you "teach" the software to retain font info?

OK, I'm using a UMAX Powerlook III to scan 2 pages at a time into OmniPage pro and I have to go back and reformat everything to match the original. How could your system help me?

(sorry to Piggyback, but this Thread caught my eye)
