How Do I find an IP of my printer?????

I thought I would post this here since more folks check this page out first (at least I do)

Anyway? the problem is trying to locate the IP addess of my Epson 1520. The HP I have prints a utility page that has the IP address on it but not so for the Epson. I need to create a "New Port" on my old Compaq PC so I can connect it back to the LAN. I had to remove PC-MACLAN from the PC, so by creating a new port that is a TCP/IP type port I can connect the printer to it, but I need the IP address of the stupid thing and can't figure out how.

Any thoughts???? :? :?: :?: :?: :?:

You have way to much time on your hands........

Having the IP address didn't help. I can't get the PC to recognize the stupid printer, no matter how I configure it. The HP on the other hand prints perfectly.

"Hand me my 12 guage ma, and put that little Compaq piece of c**p in the launcher........... PULL!!!"

check to see that the ip of the printer is on the same network. You can do this by doing a ping in the console (XP) or msdos shell (Win98). If you don't know how do either, then type this in "Run..." in the start menu:

ping XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX

(the XXX refers to the ip of the printer)

one of two things will happen. You will get a response or you won't.

If you get a response then all you need to do is add network printer (assuming that there isn't another computer acting as a print server).

If you don't, then they need to be on the same network in order to communicate. I don't know how your network is set up and there are many different ways it can be done but in a simple nutshell, just make sure the gateway matches the pc and the ip is the same as yours but one number off, for example:

your pc------> 192.168.1.25

epson--------> 192.168.1.26

keep the first three groups of numbers the same. Just make sure the last number hasn't been assigned to another device on the network otherwise you won't see it.

Gigo, the "network" is nothing more than an 8 port Ethernet Hub. I have 2 Macs, 2 PCs and 2 printers connected to it. from there the hub is connected to our DSL IO line and into our RIP which is another PC. The Rip and the PC workstation have PC-MacLan installed and see each other and everything else (printers, Macs etc.) just fine. On the other PC I uninstalled PC-MacLan and am trying to connect it to the printers just as a stand alone machine that our walk-in customers can use to access their e-mail and print out proofs. Like I stated, it (the PC in question) sees and prints to the HP just fine but when I try to "add" the Epson, it sees nothing.

I'll try the ping thing and see what happens.

ping command is a helpful tool. What it does is send packets of information to a target device and the device just simply responds back saying "yes I'm here and I can hear you!"
You need to first establish that you have communication.

With most printers you can access the configuration and change the IP. What you need to do is get a crossover cable or make one. (There are millions of sites showing how to make them). Then once you have the printer connected directly to the PC you open up your internet browser. Once this is open type in the IP in the address line as http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx then you should see a printer utility open up. Here you can change the IP and the subnet to match your network. I had to do this recently with an HP 755. Just make sure that you use a cross over cable as regular patch cable will not work.
