Publisher files on a Mac based output

I keep getting files from my sales department over and over, this is after repeated "heres your sign" statements from me about how we do not have any capability to open or output Publisher created files in our workflow.

I would like to hear your stories, on how you go about converting these using OS9 or OSX workarounds. Our output portion of our design department doesnt have any XP box's, but our creative department has a personal laptop that runs XP on it. Is there any feasability to get this thing to convert the .pub file to something our Mac's can recognize and out put to rip?... Im just looking for a way for our sales department to actually be able to know what they are talking about when they tell customers that we have the capability to do their job...

Like usual, we save the day... hopefully :-)

Thanks in advance,

jasonbuss

Publisher (otherwise known as Publiswhore and other not so nice names) can not be worked on in a Mac environment. It is MS PC platform only no way out. The best thing to do is instruct your clients how to properly produce PDFs of their documents or buy a PC work-station, swallow what pride you have left and do it that way. I have never heard (other than Virtual PC) of anyone being able to do anything with Publisher on a Mac. If I'm wrong let's hear it!! 8O 8O

I'd say you have to go the pulisher-pdf-pitstop route on the pc and produce pdf's. It works for us. You'll need a little education but it's not daunting.

Once you get the pdf's into the Mac you can impose them on whatever application you output your files from.

Contrary to many others on this forum I have not had any problems bringing pdf's into Quark 4 for imposition. I am not sure why others have if they make sure the pdf's are good. Maybe it's because our pdf rip is forgiving. I don't know. Because we use the InPosition Xtension for Quark 4 or 5......my goal right now is to get good pdf's so I can import them into Quark. I just did a 72page book from of InDesign CS with lot's of transparency through Quark 4 and InPosition without a problem. I had a lot of help here from other members to make the pdf acceptable for this particular workflow. But it's working and that's all I care about.

Publisher is actually not a terrible program when the person using it knows what they are doing. It's a hell of alot better than word.......... try saving out the file as an .eps or .ps then rip that - I don't know what rip you are using so this may not be an option for you but I've had good success on Rampage using this method.

Microsoft has a very good help site for Publisher. Whenever I can I provide the link to my customers so they can at least write a good .ps file that I can PDF and edit with PitStop.
This is the Link for Pub 2003.

true, but I find the craftsman, especially with the textured head, does much more damage with less effort.
