Preps for POD

I do all the file input for our POD dept.

In the typical press workflow when prepress is done with design it goes to our preps dept. for layout, cropmarks, etc.

When it's a POD job prepress does the layout.

How do other printers handle this? Do they let prepress do the layout, which they may not know the best solution, or is there personnel that handle the POD preps?

POD is print on demand.

My reference to layout is setting the job to run most efficiently by laying out the job so it runs 2up, 4up, 8up, 10up...

We have a preps department that used to shoot film to make plates for the press. Now they do that electronically.

Our "prepress" make/design/assemble the piece but have never done the prep work. Now they are expected to do the perp but know nothing about setting up a job for the most effecient use of paper and clicks (the toner charge per single piece and side of 8.5x11 paper).

A quike search would have told you what POD is...

Gerrye,
I've seen a few POD sites in my days. There are several approaches, but of course, your prep guys are going to know more about all the jobs coming throught o know how to set up the files for the most efficent use of your POD presses and the paper. However, I've seen many use the layout functions at the printer too to impose the simple bookletes and layouts. So it's really a matter of the type of work you do and the devices you have and the imposition software you use for your plate work today. Maybe you could elaborate for the forum members more on this?

I hope this helps!
Michael
