Sparky, if I might interject an outside bystander's perspective...

however it saddens me that you feel regret for being in this business..

Good luck.
Maybe just misunderstood. I don't regret a single minute of being in this trade.

what I regret is that after 35 years I have to hide the fact from prospective employers so that they won't think I'm burnt out and have no more years left in me

My wife and the agencies I'm listed with keep telling me to try and cut at least 10 years off the experience or start with 1980 not 1970. I got a haircut yesterday and  (hate to admit it) even got some "Just for Men" so I might look 10 years younger.
It's what you need to do, to get anywhere in the younger jiob market

Experience beats out youth any day of the week. You should see some of the "winners" the bosses have hired around here. Today's youth want a paycheck but want to work for it. Give me a person of your qualifacations and lets get the job done right the first time.
Sorry for the whine - tired of some of the co-workrs

ahh, i see... yes misunderstood. it is a shame the way the business world wants younger(read as "we can pay him less") instead of being committed to the value that experience brings.. I would be willing to bet that you've had years/jobs where the know-how you had to solve a problem or two, offset or even outweighed, the money the company would have saved by hiring a younger, cheaper operator... of course it'd be hard to put a figure on that but you get my point I hope..

as it is, who knows, maybe the "just for men" will also spark an "interest" from the ladies!!(or lady, since youre married) whohoo!! if you know what I mean?..

I totally know what you mean, there is a definate phenom. that some companies view us "experienced" folk as inflexable and expensive as compared to a "less experienced" prospective that is cheaper and can be molded without friction. And I'm sure that CAN be true. But I personally (of course!) believe that we benefit from our longevous employees and I can't stand (most of) the attitude/work ethic of the "kids from school"

Our place is like a semi-retirement home....the average age must be around 55...I'm a young pup at 46.

With older employees you might get one of 2 things:

1. They are very experienced and therefor very good at what they do.

or

2. They are too old with medical problems or no motivation.

We see both kinds around here.

Michelle, sorry to have stepped on your Thread. I posted my resume as an example of what some one with a few years experience might use. The side point that was brought up was that for someone like me who is "very" experienced it is difficult to convince the employers out there that just being young (and cheap) is not the total answer.

Concentrate on your range of value to the company, keep a positive attitude in the way you present yourself, but don't go overboard with details. If I listed all the training and different machines I can operate and/or maintain my resume would cover several pages, and that also is not good. Keep it to a single page, make it clear concise and to the point. Keep in mind that you probably have just a few seconds to impress whoever gets the resume, so it needs to be grabbing, but not to strange or cutesy.

Good luck on your search
