We actually do a combination of most in the list. The proof is usually determined by the type of job and needs of the client.

What do you think of proofing online?
ProjectProofing.com allows a company to do graphics, PDF, audio, video, flash, and web sites. You can also do estimates / proposals / project timelines

How can you gaurantee color accuracy online for four color work?
I have looked into softproofing and it seems very complicated because you not only have to manage your color calibration, but your clients also.
It is my understanding that you must have certain types of monitors for softproofing to work anyway.
As we all know, every monitor varies in display performance. This in itself makes monitor proofing inconsistent.
We do not have a need for proofing video, flash etc. PDFs are already used in proofing but usually just for content and color breaks.
We have also considered remote proofing as an option.

Good point with colors. Online proofing is best for design layout and feel.
Hard line is best for color accuracy.
The goal behind softproofing is to reduce the cost associated with hard line prints and to save time, and gas, with either running to a client site or having them come to you to display proofs.
We are still working on an online densitometer, but it will be a couple generations off.
Few online proofing solutions offer it and normally have an assocaited cost of about $15,000 (i.e. Kodaks RealTimeProof)
If you want to try ProjectProofing.com, we do offer a free 15 day trial to get a feel for it.

We do a mixture of all but most commonly we fax. The customers are happy and don't like change.

softproofing is definately for position and content only. If the customer is color critical, I have a habit of purchasing a color proof from the printer being used for the job(really only until I can afford a setup of my own), to avoid buying multiple color proofs, I make sure the customer agrees/approves the layout and content. And if they make changes after that, it goes back to softproofing, colors usually will still be what they saw on their hard color proof.... I try to avoid driving to client sites as much as possible(due to... see-->gas prices)

Even if you do soft proof a job, we still have to run a hard proof for the pressmen to run to.
No savings there. It just expedites the job.

I think the question was more from a designer situation... who in most circumstances would not have anything to do with a color proof for the pressman... I do the same thing in my prepress position for my pressman, but it is different when dealing with proofing the design process.... just trying to clarify the topic here....

I like your website, I think you got something working for you. Im not convinced it would be as helpful with "print" proofing, however for advertising and marketing, videos and commercials and such.... great concept.
