Unknown character in file/folder names

Not really sure about the choice of forum but this is somewhat font related . . .

Our ftp site sometimes ends up with files/folders with part of the name converted since it doesn't understand the original keystroke. When it does this what it is converted to causes trouble for some of our automated transfer functions. We can download the problem files manually with no issue mac or pc. I can address it per keystroke and make it something that allows the process to occur.

Problem is it is not always the same keystroke, although the display is always the same in appearance. Below is what this character looks like when copied/pasted into a text editor and enlarged. It keeps popping up and isn't being caught since I have to look for specific keystrokes.

What is this thing to start with?
What, if anything, are you using to automatically make file names conform and get rid of unrecognized "letters" without needing to filter based on the keystoke itself?

Any help or insight is appreciated,

This character is the last character in the Public Use Area of an open type font, which can vary depending on the font.

There is some more info here

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U+F8FF

If you google F8FF you'll find some more info that may help. Not sure how to get around your problem of renaming the file something useful. I'll dig a little deeper when I get home.

Thanks Dup,

Curious. I have in one case tracked it down to the last resort font. It has this in many of the keystrokes. Didn't realize it is in all open type fonts.

Sorry Local1, just got in, 8pm UK local time and had a late day plus couple of 'Stress busters' on the way. (That's beers by they way)

Last Resort Font is the font used to display the Kernal Panic message in OSX, but it's actually Lucidia Grand.

There must be a way to script/automate what files are incoming. Can you point them at a hot folder or similar and just rename them? Then you could trigger your automation...

Additionaly it's actually 'Private Use Area' not 'Public'. My bad.

My other Last Resort Font is essential for OS X to operate. Do not delete.

Too bad they can't be like bookends - before and after the day!

Ah, that helps to explain the phantom last resort a little bit more.

Yes, although the server this all happens on is remote to me. Not a lot a access to try things out myself. Of course the powers that be don't really want me dabbling in it too much. Might even make it work and still have IT wondering what it is doing.

Thanks for you insight,
local1
