Font Embedding Restrictions

Is there a way to tell if a font has embedding restrictions before you try to make a pdf.

(assuming you don't have a copy of the licensing agreement from the font supplier)

I don't think you can tell just by looking, or "get info". I have fontographer and if I drop a restricted font on it, it won't open up like a normal unrestricted font would.

Here's a read about font restrictions from Adobe on it:

What platform and what OS?

If you're in OS X 10.4, open System Profiler, select "Fonts" in the Software section, select a font in the list, and look at the "Copy Protected" and "Embeddable" values for the font in question.

Hope this helps....

Type some text with the font using InDesign, then do a Preflight. It should show you fonts that are protected.

We're still using OSX 10.3, but I think that method will work pretty good after we upgrade. Thanks.

I read that part about opening .afm files in a text editing program and tried it out. That was so cool! I tried opening other font files with TextEdit, but all I got was a blank window.
