Cleaning up fonts on a PC

Ok, I know how to do this on a Mac, but what's the best way to go about this on a PC?
What are the locations that I'll need to be checking. I know about the System Font
Folder, but a pointer in the right direction from somebody that's done it would be sweet!

Thanks on advance 8)

Thanks, Scott

I have a good list of the required fonts for the OS, so I'm fine there. I'm having a
problem finding required fonts for the applications though. It dosen't seem that there
is anything published on the basic graphic apps... probably a foreshadowing of some
sort. I'm not in a hurry to get this done so mabey I can get some more info...

Tom, you should be good to go as long as you've got a good list of system fonts. I've done this quite a few times.

Cool!

Thanks, gig0. I thought so, but on the Mac side there are a few extra for the
applications. I've already tested my list and it seems solid. Not I just need
a decent free font manager. I think almaink mentioned something about
Linotype having one for the FeeCee that'd fit the bill. Is there one that'll
handle TT, Open and T1 fonts reliably for Windows out there? If we have
to pay for it, so be it, but I'm willing to try free stuff for a bit.

Thanks again, gig0 and scott 8)

Where did you find a list of what fonts are required by the OS?

Got it from a co-worker.

Requiured for Win 2k:

Arial, Black, Bold, Bold Italic, Italic
Arial Narrow, Bold, Bold Italic, Italic
Arial Unicode MS
Franklin Gothic Medium, Italic
Microsoft Sans Serif
Modern
Script
Tahoma, Bold
Wingdings

Default fonts installed with Windows:

http://www.gammadyne.com/basefonts.htm

It seems to work fine with just the required set.

I'm running an XP machine and am wondering the same thing. The font list at the above link seems crazy long. Much longer than the list of "required fonts" found at this site.

Any advice on how skinny I can make the system fonts folder?

This is the list that I used:

Arial, Black, Bold, Bold Italic, Italic
Arial Narrow, Bold, Bold Italic, Italic
Arial Unicode MS
Franklin Gothic Medium, Italic
Microsoft Sans Serif
Modern
Script
Tahoma, Bold
Wingdings

I have some extras in there that are required by other various applications, but this
is what I started with.

Nice, thank you. How can I find out which fonts are required by apps? And does Windows install all fonts in the same place?
