Check out this site http://www.mattbeals.com/cms/

Pay particular attention to the second page where you setup color management in acrobat and pitstop. Try that and then run the convert to cmyk action list again on the original PDF with the RGB images (not the one you converted already).

Depending on the colors in the original RGB stuff, you may or may not see a change in color when you convert to CMYK.

If you want to tag the images in your document, see if you have an action list called Tag Images with ICC. If you edit that action list, you can set the profiles you want. Not sure if it's there in your version of acrobat but maybe you can download it from the enfocus web site. This won't convert the colors though, just tag with profiles.

I've tried quite a box of tricks for converting RGB to CMYK and the results were basically the same as Pitstop. If I left quite a box of tricks with the defaults, the results were terrible. If I selected the ColorSync option and put in the profiles I wanted, the results were good. The exact same thing happens with Pitstop when converting color if you don't set your profiles properly.

action list:

select images
select colorspace - device RGB (or ICC tagged or what-ever)
AND
convert color - CMYK

Make sure that you have color management activated and configured with the right source RGB profile and correct target CMYK Profile.

There is not "best ICC profile". There is the profile that belongs to the images. If it is a screen shot from Windows, a digital camera image, from Microsoft Office then it's 99.999999% chance going to be sRGB. If it is from a Mac (Quartz) Calibrated RGB. But the images should be tagged and have those profiles brought along into the PDF.

AdobeRGB is the "standard" in PRE Creative Suite/Photoshop. Lately it's been sRGB (even though it's a bit more blue).

Like I said, there's no "best profile". There's only the profile that belongs to to the capture device that is supposed to be attached by default. You can always convert RGB to RGB if you like.
