Dupont Proofing Costs

I have an internal customer (inplant printer) who just loves the Dupont Waterproofs she gets from one of her outside vendors. The lady is an idiot, but her vendor takes her on trips and kisses her ass. So.... She's always complaining that we don't have a Dupont Waterproof system with special match colors. It's the ONLY proofing system that can proof her packaging correctly. (and get her free lunches and trips south, oddly over weekends.)

What is the cost of a Dupont Waterproof system that can do special match color? the rough letter size proof cost with say CMYk +2 or 3 special matches? Is there a digital version or do you still need film (we're 100% CTP, Offset and flexo)?

Thanks for the help

well i have a cromalin b2 and i can colour match special colours - except pearlescents and metallics. its simple - you read in a target swatch, print it, tweak the LAB's and repeat until acceptable.

sorry - cant comment on the waterproof system, but my b2 is not cheap at all - each pod is 300 uk sterling - and there's 8 of the suckers in the machine! the paper is expensive as well - but we charge a healthy charge...

she may believe its the only way to proof her packaging - i'm packaging here as well and apart from metallics and pearlescents we can do most colours.

oops - i think we paid in the region of 15-18 k including software, installation, warranties, telephone support - quite a bit really - and i cant fault du-pont even though some say their day is done.

most proofers can do special colours - gmg, oris - i think it mostly depends not on the software but the machine's printing gamut and capabilities.

the big brother to the cromalin b2 is the AQ series, which are very good - expensive but good. really though, good colour management software and a good epson or canon and you should be able to cope with most proofing needs

Looking at the Waterproof literature, I can't imagine making any new investment in a proofing system so labor intensive and expecting to make a profit in todays' market place in order to satisfy one "idiot" client. B-monsters right, a competent inkjet proofing system can compete head to head with the best, but gamut may limit special colors. An inkjets' gamut is likely large enough to emulate most spot colors fairly well though.

Thanks for the info. We're not going to try and satisfy the client. We just need the "numbers" to fire back at her and her boss that they are paying to much and this system isn't cost effective when we have a Kodak XP4 and Veris Proofers that can accomplish the same thing onsite and working.

She really just doesn't want to lose her "special" treatment. I heard last week she HAD to go on a photo shoot to Hawaii so that the ad they were producing matched the product look. Funny thing, it's not even her product line.

I have a Dupont WaterProof system collecting dust. Do you want to buy it cheap?
