2007 IPA Proofing RoundUp - End User Participation

Lot of talk about proofing Rips and Colormanagement lately. In that regard, in order to get a more real world look at the industry the IPA is encouraging end-users to participate in this years Proofing Roundup. No cost to submit an entry and you don't have to attend the conference, though they're offering $50 off for those that submit entries.

More details on how to participate here:

I see, that you are in the RoundUP Leadership Team.

Can you describe shortly how does it work exactly?

Derek

Did they list me as "Clod" or is my cover blown.

In addition to the details on the website you mean? Basically the IT8/7.4 target is measured using a DTP70 (end-user indicates whether uv filtration or not is needed...this might need to be made clearer in the online proof submission form) and compared to the Gracol2006_Coated1 data set using an excel file. Delta values are calculated using average of all patches. 95th percentile, Solid and primaries (CMYRGB) Gray (50C, 40MY), and paper white. Delta E 76 formula is used through out, though other formulae (2000, 94) may be presented for comparison.

The ADS colorbar on all pages of the form will be measured (using an Xrite 530 I believe) and compared to each other...the measurements must be within 1.5 dE of each other for a sheet to sheet comparison. The Fogra media wedge data is extracted from the IT8/7.4 data. This would be merely to guage how accurately this color bar predicts overall comformance and how it correlates to the IT8 data comparison.

I don't think the tolerences to determine pass/fail are set in stone as of yet as, but will be shortly.

What is the purpose of this? They will not disclose names of participants, right? Is this just for me to know how good or bad my proofing is?

Why change this year anyway? What was wrong with testing manufacturers?

Manufacturers/Venders will still be tested this year, but given the results of the last two years, its expected that most if not all venders participating will pass. The purpose of opening this up to the end users is to get a better feel of the state of the industry and allow end-users to test their own configuration. End users likely use differing media than the venders...and obviously not all venders have participated in the past, so this really opens the testing up to the masses. If anyone is using Digital presses for generating output toward the Gracol data for example, this would be valuable info.

Its annonymous basically to protect the identity of those who don't pass.

Last question.

Why do they use a chart for a discontinued measuring device? Should the measuring target be made for Isis instead of dtp-70?

I think this is because Dr. Sharma happens to have a DTP-70, and the Idealliance forms were generated with this target becuase Don Hutcheson happens to have a DTP-70.
