Photoshop noise / mezzotint line pattern issue

I have a photoshop greyscale tif file that has a speckled background created using the noise filter and when it is proofed on a kodak approval at 133 or 150 line screen, an unwanted checkerboard pattern appears. Any solutions?

Hi Design3.
If the job is NOT 4col process then you could play around with the screen angles on the proofing device and then produce plates/films at said angle.

Depends on the purpose of the filter applied to the picture really. The noise pattern probably wont show up well being output at 133 or 150 screen surely.

I have had this before and basically I was stuffed and all I could do was alter the angle of output to minimise the problem.

Sorry I cant help more mate.

Nellster.

That's a subject moire pattern. Try changing the frequency and angles of the pattern in Photoshop. You could also try using stochastic screening. Otherwise, you're going to have to shift the angle and frequency when proofing AND printing. Which is probably not going to go over real well with the people proofing and or printing it...

or you could outsource it to someone with a dye sublimation printer (like a fuji pictaproof). that doesn't use a dot, so it should solve your problem.

i sincerely doubt it. you see its the dot pattern that is causing the moire in the noise you want to produce. so in a perfect world you may be able to do 1 of 3 things
1) change your angles on your dot pattern to help reduce it (as others have said)
2) find a stochastic printer (otherwise known as FM screening)
3) use a dye sublimation printer (in my opinion you would get the best results here)

That may mask the issue on the proof, but if its printing with traditional screening, it could still show up on press, no? Of course, couple that proof with FM screening and its a non-issue. When applying the noise filter, you might try (if you haven't already) using the guassian distribution, which is more random than uniform. A higher res might actually help with subject moir?, but in this case, the pattern is coming from the applied noise, so it night not, though a higher linescreen when output might have an effect. Of course, this post is also over a month old, so the whole deal is likely a dead issue, eh?
