Need a new color laser printer

We are looking into replacing our 2 oldest Xerox Splash stations. This will be for internal proofing only before sending out to the printer. Here are the general specs for what we need.

1. Speed - On average, I?d say we print about 300 pages per day
2. Decent color calibration system
3. AppleTalk connectivity
4. Would like to be able to print 11 x 17, but not required

Keeping in mind that management wants to spend as little as possible (of course), what are your suggestions?

I've heard good things about Xerox's Phaser line of color printers.

Careful about cutting corners. You usually get what you pay for.

I've got a Xerox Phaser 8400 here at the office and I like it, but wouldnt buy another one... it uses "Dry Ink Technology" which is like melted down crayons. The color is nice and the image quality is nice, BUT you cannot write over it(ie to note corrections) and it scratches off(like crayon does if you've ever colored a big solid. It's just a layer of colored wax. :? It wont print 11x17, largest size is 8.5 x 14... just my .02...

what about the Epson line??... Aculaser also only 8.5x14 though..

I think I'd check these out if I was shopping... Probably would like one of these at home for my early stages design proofs..... just one man's opinion though.

kyocera

I'd also look at these.. if I were shopping, which I wish I was, I need something nice like this at home... alas the times are not good enough due to a stinkin upcoming wedding...

also one other thing about the Xerox... Plan on ink running you $100 per color.. so $400 to refill... 8O rediculous.. there are some off name brand "compatable" inks but they suck and dont last nearly as long... Im buying ink about once a quarter, and print only 10-to 50 pages a day... just an fyi

There's always this place if you want free Phaser

http://www.freeprinters.com/

Scroll down and you'll see them mention a couple of 8550 series machines.

I know some people have signed up and it's working good for them, but that's about all I know. Never used a Phaser myself.

Hello Again....

I’ve received some clarification about what management is looking for in the new printer:
• Mac OSX compatible drivers
• Ethernet connectivity
• Adobe PostScript level3 language support
• Color correction options (ability to do color calibrations on a regular basis, color standards that are PANTONE approved, and support for Apple ColorSync color management system)
• 500 sheet paper tray
• 8.5 x 11 and 11 x 17 paper trays
• 20 pages per minute for color output
• 30 users
• About 5000 impressions per month

Anybody have any new suggestions based on these requirments? We’ve not had good luck with the Phaser line.

We've got a Xerox 7750 here, albeit we don't have that many users printing to it, but it can or should be able do all of your requirements.

We've got all 5 trays loaded with various sizes of material (from the SRA3 to letter in different colors and thicknesses).
