Monitor calibration v ambient light

I purchased Pantone's ColorVision ColorPlus colorimeter. It's the bottom-of-the-line monitor calibration tool for "home users" (read "schmucks").

My monitor looks extremely warm after calibration - ie greys look quite red.

Before I give up and sell it to some other sap, can anybody tell me if my lighting is making the difference? I have 6500K lights in my office. If I had D50 lighting, would it make enough difference to make my monitor seem neutral?

Damo.

Are you calibrating your monitor to 5000K? I've never been a big fan of doing so as it always seems to warm...even when compared to a viewing booth at 5000K as well. Have you tried (or do you have the option) of calibrating to native temperature, which would likely be closer to 6000-6500? Might give it a try.

Alas, the ColorPlus doesn't give me an option. I also suspect it's calibrating to 5000K. I wondered if anybody out there could tell me for sure.

Piece of junk ... money poorly spent!

Yes, but on the upside - WE all get to learn from your bad experience!

Thx for the warning on the suck factor of the hardware though, sorry ya had to be the guinea pig.
