trouble matching Pantone

I am running an Epson 7600 with Colorproof XF. I have the generic PantoneXF.icc loaded and it reproduces PMS 1495 way too dark. How can I get it to print a match to the pms book. I also am waiting to hear back from guy who did install who may be able to help me tweek the color some with the color editor function. Is there a reason I can't label the PMS in the native eps with 1495 CVC instead of 1495 C, & where is that swatch palette in Illi. ops: I feel retarded all I can find is 1495 C. I haven't had this problem with other PMS colors yet, but we have only run a few proofs with PMS in it since install. It matched 3125 pretty damn close just this morning as well, so I'm thinking maybe it just has a hard time with the reds and yellows.... any help would be greatly appreciated.

edit: I was trying to change to CVC in illi because in Colorproof XF with the spot profile all the pantone colors show as named PMS ??? CVC and I thought maybe that might have something to do with it not reproducing correctly, because the 1495 C then shows as an unknown spot color and ColorproofXF is set to use default on unknown spot colors.

We're using ORIS color tuner on our epson and I think the functionality is about the same. You should be able to dupe (or copy) the color in question and give it a new name (without the cvc designation) and then edit the values. I've done this for custom colors (like Die and Varnish) and it works very well.

Hope this helps,
David

PS. Check out this thread. It's for Indesign but the same is true for Illustrator Swatch Libraries.

Thanks David. I think I will need a pantone to process book to figure the screen mixes to input into my copied color in the color editor in ColorproofXF. When I change 1495 in Illi> 0,33,67,0 which is no where close to the PMS book. 1495 uses 4pts 021 and 12pts transparent white.

I'm getting closer to 157 (6pts pantone yellow, 2pts pantone rub. red, 14pts trans white) when I print the file with 1495 as the spot. 8)

I guess my only option to getting it done today, is to copy the troubled color and rename then, trial and error to get good screen mix. Can anyone lend a tip about steps to take or hints to reduce the trial & errors. Or can someone post the pantone to process mix from their book for 1495? Thanks all.

Supplies:
1 bottle of Corona
Triple Sec
Vodka
Lime or lemon juice
Lime wedge (optional)

Directions:
1) Drink the Corona down to the base of the neck (less or more depending how much of the other ingredients you want to add).
2) Add equal parts of Triple Sec, Vodka, and juice.
3) Place thumb over the top and slowly turn the bottle over a few times to mix. DO NOT SHAKE IT.
4) Remove thumb. (There may be some release of pressure and liquid.)
5) Add a lime wedge if desired.
6) Drink it.
7) Repeat. Always Repeat!

Just got off the phone with dude from install, he went in to the same generic profile and the screen mix for 1495 was entered as 100,74,41,65 this is a damn near black...???  don't know who entered those figures but I'll have this puppy wagging it's tail in no time. Thanks again David.

also the name issue has its effect too, colorproof xf was using a default since the name was different>C vs. CVC

In ORIS I get this for 1495:
L75, a39, b64 or
0c, 50m, 67.5y, 0k
It's not going to match exactly due to the use of trans white in the formula.

Hope this gets you closer,
David

In colorproofXF and photoshop, I get this for 1495> L*71 A*35 B*56 and 0,51,81,0 for CMYK. I am still getting the same printed color when I print though No matter what i put in, These people have seen four freakin proofs now and they have been trying to pick color from their monitor I think the salesman finally took a pantone book to them and said "pick" <why's that gotta be so hard, i asked the salesman to do that 3 proofs ago. Then get the damn copy signed off on and "look mister customer, we are running it as fifth color and PMS ink is PMS ink on press you will get this right here(points at book and taps foot)

oh wait did I mention this job is for another print shop(flexo) THEY SHOULD KNOW BETTER.  I'll get through it and go have a white owl.

I do want to clarify so I know I'm understanding correctly.

If the PMS color that the customer has chosen uses transparent white to produce that ink, I cannot match it on my Epson proof exactly, I can get it close but not exact. Is that how it is for ALL PMS that have transparent white? or just some? Is orange one of the toughter colors to match?

Pretty much. Any Pantone color that contains transparent white will be difficult to match exactly. Also, if it contains Reflex blue or Rubine red, you can only just get close. Orange is a particularly tough one at that. You might be able to play with your "recipe", but....

good luck,
David
