We have had our dual G4 xserve for a good few years now and it's been flawless. We only have a modest number of clients (3 G5s, 3 eMacs 2 Brisques and a couple of PCs) but it seems perfect for us. We also run a small website and FTP server on there too.
I have recently upgraded to Tiger server to accomodate some new 500GB drive modules, and apart from one issue with NAT, it went very smoothly. I couldn't recommend them enough to be honest.

We've just purchased the new Intel box, but have not put it into full production yet. I've got 1 G4, 2 G5's, 2 Xraids at 2.8tb each. I have 14 workstations, 7 nexus boxes, 1 odystar box and a brisque for legacy stuff. We run all Gigabit.
I agree totally with the 4 gigs of ram. That's necessary. But it's like money...you never have enough.
The ONLY thing that is a pain in the butt Nexus thing is that if you copy your .tct/.tlw files back to your server (everything here goes back to the server in the job folder) It looses it's resource and just shows up as a document. So you can't double-click on a page and open it in Insite. You have to go into the application and Open, "All Documents".
Uh..so, I say buy the xserve.

detric_1 isn't that just down to your file copy settings. You set server type default, Samba, Helios, OSX or something like that.
As for the thread Mac all the way man.

Wow, we are hoping to upgrade a nexus box sounds like the macs the way to go.
Didn't there use to be a issue with running nexus on the mac, like limited options or something?

You can't drive PCI-x cards and you can't have AppleTalk printer driven workflow's.
I think that is all.
I don't use printer driven WF's anymore. I use Shuttle and use XML to make setting changes or Keywords to change info in the legend.

Madmac beat me to it, those are the only limitations that I know of on Xserve boxes, I really don't see not having AppleTalk printers is actually a limitation here, since we do everything through hot folders.
We have two Intel Xserve boxes and I love them, it smokes anything else we have in the building, even the new PC servers. I actually had to slow down one of the boxes w/ Nexus, since it was too fast for one of our other servers feeding one of the output devices. First time I have ever had to do anything like that.
Also Nexus does not run native on Intel Xserves yet, so Nexus is actually running in Rosetta. AWS says we should be getting a native version later on in the year.

I believe 8.5 beta is been tested by beta customers in the US now having read some of the threads.

From what I understand, 8.5 will be intel native...but I haven't heard anything as to how it runs. (speed-wise)
Madmac.... I thought that might be it too originally, but it doesn't change anything. I'm guessing that the copy module on a PC doesn't move the resource file that a mac needs.

Shuttle is a way of submitting a file to a WF instead of using Hot-folders, Printers or Drag and Drop onto Nexus Manager.
Shuttle is a plug-in for Illustrator is built into ArtPro or as a stand alone app.
Should be in your Nexus manager folder.
You can define WF parameters via XML (doesn't need any further license). Eg which proofer to use or resolution custom folder or file names Set trapping types.
In the UK they had a Workshop where we were trained how to use it.
