Sorta silly question about bleed

I've been given the impression a couple of times in the past that you can some how create pdf documents that have bleed, but it doesn't show up on screen.
Actually, come to think of it, I've placed pdf documents in InDesign before and the preview shows media which I can't see when I open in acrobat.

What's the story with this?

Hi,

PDF's contain more boxes than an EPS. They are:

PDF boxes
1. Crop Box - usually document size/page format size
2. Trim Box - Begins with bounding box. Follows the bleed box as to where the file should be cropped
3. Bleed Box - Defined in Quark or InDesign by pulling elements outside of the bounding box.
4. Media Box - Entire background of any document (working space)
5. Art Box - Elements created within the document

EPS boxes
1. Bounding Box - Usually document size/page format size
2. Show Page - Preview information (either Tiff or Pict)

If you adjust the trim box, technically the info will be in the document but it will not show up on screen or print (unless you overide the trim box settings in imposition).
