Sounds like you have something going on with your OS. Check your bios settings to make sure no one played with them. There really shouldn't be a need to reformat a drive unless you have someone playing around in areas that they shouldn't be in - to play it safe, make sure you have the latest service pack loaded and set up a user account this way your other users can't screw things up logged in under the admin account. One other suggestion is to partition or install a second drive and keep all your apps and working files on one drive or partition and keep your OS on the other, this will save you a great deal of time if you do need to reformat the partition. If the partition or additional drive suggestion doesn't appeal to you then i'd consider picking up a program such as Ghost to make an Image file of the drive.
