Missing white type...

We've recently ran into a situation where some of the white type in several different pdf files disapeared. All the files we work with start out as InDesign files, are printed to .ps files and then distilled using the X-1a settings. We then run pdf optimizer on the resulting X-1a and send it to the rip. On a few of the pages the white type was missing from the ripped pages.

We check color by sending either the .ps or .pdf to our Epson 7600 and everything looked good then. As a final check before the ripped files go out the door we print color lasers from the ripped files and that is when we noticed the missing white type... So, I reopened the InDesign file and did all the steps again only the white type showed up. 8O

Any ideas what's going on?

Thanks,
-MC

Probably overprinting and the rip in your Epsom doesn't support it

Agree about the overprint setting. Make sure your separation preview is not open and turn on overprint preview, If it is an overprint problem the white text will disappear. Turn overprint preview back off and your white text will re-appear. You can fix it with a global change using pitstop under the prepress tab.

Thanks for the ideas. I will check into the overprinting...

I believe the white type is filled with "white" not paper and I know it isn't black at 0%.

We recently changed our workflow to make things "easier". We had been placing all the images on their own layer, printing them, rasterizing that in PhotoShop, then placed the .eps/.tif back into InDesign and output that (with the other elements) for the final pdf output. It was a bit of extra work, but we didn't need to worry about transparency or overprint issues. Well, we stopped doing that since the new RIP we are getting is going to handle transparency better. I think the real problem is we don't actualy have the new RIP yet. :? Whatever...

(this turned into a bit of a rant at the end I guess)
