Missing text and elements

Anyone ever have type on reverse missing or graphics. Using 5.0.5, exporting as an eps file, placing in Quark 5.0 and exporting for pagination. Preflighting showed one of the graphics was Illustrator 10. Could it be our rips?

Could it be a trapping thing? is the type set to overprint?

Maybe. I don't create the PDF files. They come in from clients. Is there a way to tell from the PDF file?

OK, so I tested this ad using Acrobat 4.0 and it came out fine. So now I'm thinking it could have something to do with RGB. What if the black under the type was RGB? Does 5.0 handle it differently?

what EPS save as settings are you using from Acrobat 5.0.5 file.
Are the fonts OK in the original PDF file (listed as embedded/subset).

I wouldn't recommend EPS-ing a PDF, then placing it in Quark and PS-ing it again... If the PDF contained spots or transparency wierd things can happen.

What is the PS-level of your RIP? Has it been upgraded to latest PS-level3? If you are receiving a lot of PDFs I'd recommend investigating a PDF based workflow.

From Acrobat I save the eps as binary(should I use Asci?) w/pict preview. All the fonts are embedded. We have using the process I described for years and never had a problem until now. I can't place the PDF directly into Quark because the Quark we use for pagination can't recognize them. One of our rips just got upgraded and it's Level 1 I believe. I can check on this with our IT guy comes back from vaca. I had one today do it. I saved it with 4.0 and it was fine.

Does this mean you are converting your PDFS to PostScript Level 1 EPS?

Just remember that not all features are backward compatible and really it is not a good workflow.

I'd do my outmost best to try and get the boss to upgrade equipment and software... as you are now encountering problems where there shouldn't be any... (if RIPs were PS Level 3 upgraded).

It's either level 1 or 2. I'm at home and I can't remember! It's definitely not 3. I will show this correspondence to my boss. I've been telling them for a while that we're going to have problems. So they upgraded one rip. But, our newsroom doesn't even use it yet!! When I know something will not print correctly, I have them send it to the upgraded rip. Drives me crazy.

i remember on postscript level 2 rips you had issues with black knocked out type.

fine when you print directly from quark, but once you pdf it it still lookes fine on screen but prints wrong to film.

how ever if you have the quark file you can work around it with the right trapping settings (like making white type 1% cyan and knock out)

you can also create colour seperated pdf's, but only of you have the software for it.

and you should be able to find a extension for quark to import pdf files.

hope that helps...

cheers
