interactive elements lost when distilling from indesign

we try to distill a post script file created in InDesign. we've set a lot of links/interactivity in InDesign, but I can't find the settings in distiller to keep it interactive.

I know it works with exporting, but while distilling it, it becomes much smaller.

anyone know where the settings are hidden away?

cheers, dimitri

Please explain what you mean by "we've set a lot of links/interactivity in InDesign". If all artwork is linked in the InDesign file it should embed in the PDF. I have no idea what you mean by "interactivity".

hi alminak...

with interactivity I mean that we've set hyper links, links to other pages etc.

you do that in InDesign, so when you create a PDF, all this stuff can be used. You click on links to go to web-sites, email or jump to other pages.

We set up many CI's up like that. Everything works when you export from InDesign, my question was, does anyone know how to write a PS file, distill it and still keep the hyper links.

Thanks, Dimitri

It simply doesn't exist in PostScript. Direct PDF export is the only way that you are going to get that kind of "interactivity".

That is partially correct, InDesign does not export a PostScript file in the traditional sense of the word, it exports an EPS which Matt is correct in saying direct PDF is the only way in InDesign to get that level of interactivity.
Of all the things to bash Quark for lately, their PostScript generation is more true to the definition and will allow hyperlinks to be embedded. QuarkXPress' PS files will distill with hyperlinks intact.

so we've got two answers here.

1. postscript never support hyperlinks
2. postscript from quark does support hyperlinks

but indesign and acrobat, from the same developer does not work like that?

not that it would be a huge problem. It's just that my exported files from indesign are much bigger than the postscript generated files (and yes, the same settings)

so when you import a quicktime movie in indesign, i assume it would be gone too when you write a postscript. should try that.

BTW, is anyone doing his folio with interactive pdf's? i thought it would be common practise by now.

cheers, dimitri
