Saving Acrobat 5 compatible files from Acrobat 6

I am one of the few users in our company using Acrobat 6 right now, so everything I do to PDFs I want to be compatible with Acrobat 5. One of the most common tasks I do is to combine PDF files into 1 PDF, but when I save it, it isn't compatible with 5.0 anymore and I don't appear to have any options during my save available to me. Does anyone know how to save back from 6?

I'm not in front of a 6 at the moment but I think under Advanced > Optimise PDF... you can convert your PDF to 5.

that's spot on Bart...

Advanced> PDF Optimizer...

one warning... be careful in using this, as by DEFAULT all fonts will be un-embedded. Prior to applying check the various tab-settings (Images, Fonts, Clean-up).

It's a pretty good feature to use after editing/saving of earlier version PDFs in Acrobat 6 to ensure you're PDF version doesn't jump to v.1.5 which isn't supported by many printers/service providers at present..

Re: Saving Acrobat 5 compatible files from Acrobat 6

If worse comes to worse you could always perform a "save as" to save your document in Postscript format and re-distill it to the level of your choice, thus preserving font embedding and achieving a legacy level file.

You are on Windows?
Can do this:
1) File>Printer's and Faxes>Select Adobe PDF printer>right Click>Printing Preferences , Edit and select a
joboption with Acrobat 5 compatibility.
2) Print directly from Acrobat using Adobe PDF.

Re: Saving Acrobat 5 compatible files from Acrobat 6

Just a heads up when "Saving As" or using PDF Optimizer:

Received a PDF that was print ready, opened in Acrobat 6 Pro, did a "Save As" and renamed the file. When the job was on the press, text had dropped out throughout the document. The "Save As" caused text to drop out due to the optimizing for Fast Web View option. (Preferences -> General -> Save As optimizes for Fast Web View). In PDF Optimizer, this is under the Clean Up tab.

To make a long story short, testing reavealed that this was an isolated occurrance and was due to the way the files were distilled and combined, i.e., different PDF versions (1.3, 1.4, 1.5), different creators, font embedding vs. embedding & subsetting, etc. However, to prevent this from happening again, it was decided to de-select both of these preferences since we often have to use supplied PDFs.

if you create hi res files for your printing process and only have to share it with accountpeople to get it to the client, don't forget the "reduce file size" option under ->file.

cheers
