files from illustrator to pdf using distiller.....Help

All the magazines these days require pdf files using Distiller. A few years away and I'm a little lost. I create my layouts in AI and usually place a photoshope eps image file as part of my layout. I notice when I drag my ai.eps file (with link image files) to acrobat professional, distiller opens and processes the file. If I save the file as a pdf I'm guessing I've done it right but....still left with a few questions. Do I need to embed the image file first in illustrator? Am I doing this right?

That should work fine but make sure that your embedding the fonts under job options in distiller. Asking the magazines for their job options is the easist & safest way to distill pdfs for publications. If you were sending the ai.eps you would have to embed or send along the linked ps file.
