In book/magazine/print publishing, it's been like this for at least a decade now here in NYC. I doubt this will improve either. Whenever I get to the opportunity to speak with anyone new in this field to stay out of it or at least get out early.

Even though, PDF/JDF is pushing to streamline everything even further from upstream to downstream, prepress will always be necessary at either publishers' or printers' end.

The questions isn't where and why, but rather ask yourself do you want to stay in this industry, and if yes, do you have the experience and knowledge to compete.
